As has become tradition, once again this year part of the route of the Vuelta will pass through Andorra. The Vuelta a España and the Tour de France, two of the most important cycling races, as well as the Giro d’Italia, make the most of their proximity to Andorra and organise part of or a whole stage in the principality.
We can enjoy the race live in Andorra this year, as the entirety of stage 9 will be completed in our country on 1 September. This was one of the toughest days in 2018, when the route covered a total distance of 105.8 kilometres with more than 4,000 metres of altitude change. This year, we will tremble with excitement again with a stage that reuses a section of last year’s route but is slightly shorter at 96.6 km.
To complete the course, the riders will have to traverse five major mountain passes: the Coll de Ordino, the Gallina (the most difficult), the Comella, and, for the first time, Engolasters and Els Cortals, where the finish line will be located. Along this route, they will cross almost all of the seven parishes: Sant Julià, the capital, Escaldes, Ordino, Canillo and Encamp, but not la Massana.
New for this year, for the first time in the race’s history there will be a 4 km stretch where the riders will be rolling over unpaved roads (the so-called “sterrato”). This section is found between Engolasters Lake and Els Cortals de Encamp, along the Pardines road.
