Mahesh, Anija and Dyvian are our experts in Ayurvedic treatments from India. In this interview, our experts tell us more about Ayurveda and the most exotic treatments available at Caldea.
Ayurveda is a form of medicine that originated in India 5,000 years ago. Its name comes from the words Ayur (life) and Veda (science), so it means the science of life.
In Ayurveda, good health is considered to be a reflection of the harmony between the body and the surrounding environment, along with the belief that illness is an indication of physical, mental or spiritual imbalance. Therefore, the state of every individual is a unique combination of the three doshas that can be found within us (vata, pitta and kapha), which themselves represent a mixture of the five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth). Every person typically has a dominant dosha (sometimes two), but if this dosha gains too much strength, or if a secondary dosha catches up, an imbalance is caused that may bring about sickness or discomfort.
Ayurvedic treatments aim to re-establish the balance of the recipient’s doshas. Caldea provides an extensive array of Ayurvedic treatments, 4 of which have been selected so their benefits can be explained in more detail below. In all cases, the protocol starts with a general full-body massage with warm oil to aid physical and mental relaxation.
In addition to the warm medicinal oil used at the beginning, this traditional 75-minute treatment also requires hot cloth pouches that are prepared in advance. These pindas (the name for the pouches) contain a secret mixture of herbs, salt, lemon, coconut, garlic, etc., which has been cooked in medicinal oils.
After the full-body massage, the pindas are applied to key points on the body. The massage is soft, but due to the heat of the oil and the warm pindas, the effects on the body are similar to those of a more vigorous massage.
This massage is particularly beneficial for relieving joint pain, arthrosis, muscular stiffness and inflammation, as well as relaxing the body and mind.
This 75-minute detox treatment requires a preparation of medicinal oils and a powder made from specific dried fruits. This preparation is used on the whole body following a back and head massage and the application of warm medicinal oils, also to the entire body. The preparation is highly exfoliating and ideal for removing dead skin cells to relieve skin conditions like psoriasis, or for reducing body fat and eliminating toxins.
Of all the Ayurvedic treatments available at Caldea, this is one of the most unique. As with the previous examples, it begins with a head and back massage with warm oil followed by the application of warm pindas. In this case, the pindas (remember that this is the name of the cloth pouches with specific fillings) are prepared with a mixture containing Navara (a medicinal rice) that is cooked using cow’s milk. The Navara pindas are heated in milk and are initially applied in pouch form, before being split open so the medicinal rice can be spread across the skin. The treatment ends with a body massage with herbal oil.
This 75-minute treatment is ideal for those who want to achieve beautiful skin while toning their body and relaxing both their body and mind.
Finally, we suggest a 1-hour treatment which specifically targets chronic and localised pain. This protocol begins with a full-body massage with warm oil. Afterwards, a circle of medicinal flour and herbs is created with the central hole positioned over any pain points, the cavity in the paste is then filled with hot medicinal oils.
This is a highly effective method for relieving back and shoulder pain which simultaneously helps to alleviate chronic pain, disc problems and joint stiffness.
